Over all, I have bought 2 bokkens, a shoto and a tanto. I gave I was hitting as fast and as hard as I could. After a solid 5 minutes of full speed contact. We took a break. I looked at my Hickory bo. It had been chewed up and spit out. It looked like someone had just gone and smacked it against a metal streetlight post. I eventually had to re-sand the entire thing to prevent it from chipping. You may find a few sites on the web claiming to be selling Ebony martial arts weapons, and while only a handful of these sites may be legit, realize that many others may tell you that what they are selling you is Ebony, or “Ironwood” as it is sometimes called, it is important to be aware that there are different types of Ebony available, and that there are many wood-types worldwide that are referred to as “Ironwood.”
In other words, just because two wood-types share the same nickname or the same “family,” it does not mean that they share the same physical characteristics!! In fact, knowing the difference can mean night and day between what you are actually buying compared to what you think you are buying. For instance, what Filipinos call Kamagong is also one of the many woods known as "Ironwood," but Kamagong is a wood that is specific to the Philippine Islands, and while called Philippine Ebony (Disopyros Ferrea), should not be mistaken for Macassar Ebony, which originates from the Island of Celebes in Indonesia. So, if you see someone selling a wood called Kamagong, and they tell you it is Philippine Ebony and that it is the same as Macassar Ebony (Disopyros Celebica)…IT IS NOT!!! Chances are, they don’t know much about either wood if they make that simple mistake.
Unfortunately, many overseas manufacturers of martial art martial arts weapons are very aware of the lack of knowledge in 99% of the martial artists worldwide. So, to make a few dollars in struggling, impoverished, 3rd world countries like the Philippines, they will sell Philippine Ebony, as the unknowing commoner will assume equality due to similarity, thinking it is the Ebony that they are looking for. Also important to note is that native Filipinos sometimes also refer to Philippine Mahogany as Ironwood as well and try to sell items using the term Ironwood as a smokescreen, leading the buyer to think it is actually real Ebony. Even still, there will be those who will sell you "genuine Ironwood" products, only for the buyer to make the purchase and realize that the dark-brown Mahogany was stained black or darkened with paint. The truth is that someone selling you genuine Macassar Ebony probably won’t be selling it to you for an extremely cheap price, because like I said, it is an extremely rare and expensive wood, so how can they afford to do that?
